Visit Guelph 2019 - Spring Edition

Visit Guelph 2019 - Spring Edition

Spring isn’t here, but the Visit Guelph Guide is…

One of my favourite projects to do all year and super lucky that I get to do this 2x a year. This edition boasts a new illustrative look which I hope y’all will love. I love the maps that we included (did I mention I love drawing maps?) and the Guelph wallpaper is my fave. But I really dig the content. Guelph has got such amazing things to offer, its one of the reasons we stayed in Guelph all those years ago. To find out what’s in Guelph, grab your Visit Guelph Guide almost anywhere downtown Guelph.

Guelphentines are here!

Guelphentines are here!

It’s that time of year again- Guelphentines Day, The day that I send Guelphentines to all my favourite clients and the ones I’m crushing on. I love this project, not only because it was a personal project but because it made me not hate Valentines Day quite so much. Anyone with me?

This time I added three new postcards in the mix pack, in a different style than the others. So happy with how it came out. I added two LGBTQ Guelphentines -because love is love honey. You can see them all under the guelphentines in the menu bar. My favourite one was this one shown with - guess who? Yup, that’s @birdspapaya ‘s beautiful mug you see. Ain’t she a pretty picture? What a local gem and national treasure that one is. She’s the reason I’m sitting on my front stoop writing this in a bikini.

True story.

Check her out on Insta if you don’t already, you can thank me later with a bag of cheesy puffs.

Alphabet Challenge/ Type Challenge

Alphabet Challenge/ Type Challenge

Teaching type design was one of my favourite things I’ve done this year. The Glyphs app is amazing and if you haven’t tried it, I highly recommend it for typeface building. That said, I wanted to give myself another challenge to show the students the importance of personal work, passion projects and personal challenges.

I mean, I clearly had fun with it. My fave might be ‘c’ (butt cheeks). Between this and my advent calendar I’ve noticed how many viewers had fun finding the letters/numbers in each illustration. It gave me the opportunity to flex my illustrative muscles (which I love), and to think outside the box (which I love even more). But mostly I love making stuff that makes people smile.

For a full look at the play by play with comments, go to Insta. I actually did this one backwards so I started with Z, to end at A just for the gram feed. (eyeroll emoji, I know).

Advent-ures...

Advent-ures...

I mean, I do love a challenge.

So I wanted to give myself an Insta challenge to make something everyday just for social. So I set out to do an Advent challenge. Everyday I drew a quick illustration using the number of the day, which HAD to be in Helvetica (naturally). Magenta, black, white and Kraft background were to be the colour palette. Some I did ahead of time, and some 20 mins before. And I gotta say, I had so much fun with this. Can you tell? And P.S. - I won a little RGD Social media contest from it. You gotta love personal projects- right?

To see them all one by one alongside my quippy comments, check out my Insta and swipe back a bit.

R to the G to the D....

R to the G to the D....

Oh heeeeeey….

Look who is a Registered Graphic Designer? (Allll the Raise the Roof emojis).

So proud that I did this. It’s something that I’ve been meaning to do since I graduated… ahem… a few years back. But I’m so glad I finally got off my mouse pad to do it. The best part was going to my first ever Design Thinkers conference in TO. What an amazing and inspirational conference. So, what does the RGD designation mean to y’all? It holds the graphic design industry to a higher standard with higher calibre work. It also acts to support our industry through education, awareness and promotion.

We’re working hard everyday to stop the use of Comic Sans.

death of a pigeon.

death of a pigeon.

Let me explain…

As mentioned in el bio, I had been Pigeon Design Lab for the last nine years. (After my son’s nickname). However, this year, a much bigger pigeon came along and said I can’t be a pigeon anymore. And so, my fine-feathered friends, I wanted to have a little *fun* killing off this pigeon o’ mine.

I figure if a cat has nine lives than a Pigeon has to have at *least* four - right? This series I titled #deathofapigeon while I mulled over what the next rendition would be. I staggered the release of them every Monday and hashtagged them #mondaymournings - see what I did there? Of course you did, honey we *get* each other.

Quite honestly, this was a *crappy* thing that happened, so I tried to use allll those therapy clichés to get through it. I *sat with it*, I *reframed*, I *unpacked my feelings* … and in the end, a good ‘ol self-deprecating cocktail always takes the edge off.

‘El hath no fury like an illustrator scorned.
